It's shown over and over again. Formula 1 was and has always been one of the most exciting and beloved sports. Yet, while it seems just like fast cars, the crashes and engineering if you look only on the surface, once you take a deeper look, it's really not just the technical aspect of it. Emotionally, the rivalries that unfold on- and off track play a big part in the reason we watch.

Simply put, Formula 1 is the epitome of skill, strategy and speed. But when drivers with big egos and incredible talent go head-to-head, well, it'll always be more than just engineering.

But, what makes us so emotionally attached and invested to the sport? And why does it keep us watching? Psychological studies and analyses show that fan engagement is the manifestation of the need to establish social identity, the desire for a sense of belonging, and the drive to experience the feeling of achievement and association. And the rivalries, give us this exact need for social identity and association. Rivalries add a human element to the sport, showing us the personalities behind the helmets. They give us heroes to root for, villains to boo, and storylines that stretch across seasons. As this season just ended, we have marked 74 years of amazing racing and rivalries, which we'll have a deeper dive into.

One of the most legendary rivalries in Formula 1 history is the battle between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. These two drivers, who raced for McLaren in the late 1980s, couldn’t have been more different. Senna was passionate, aggressive, and fearless, while Prost was calculated, precise, and methodical. Their clashes on the track were explosive, with iconic moments like their controversial collisions at the 1989 and 1990 Japanese Grand Prix. Their rivalry wasn’t just about speed, it was a psychological war, with each driver pushing the other to their limits.

In more recent years, the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen has reignited this very same excitement. In the 2021 season, Hamilton, a seven-time world champion known for his consistency and racecraft, faced Verstappen, a young, aggressive driver hungry for his first title. The season was filled with emotionally binding moments: wheel-to-wheel battles, collisions, and debates over fairness and racing rules. The intensity reached its peak at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where a controversial final lap decided the championship. Fans worldwide were divided, with some celebrating Verstappen’s victory and others crying foul over how it unfolded.

These rivalries aren’t just about drivers. Teams like Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull Racing also have fierce rivalries, competing for the constructors’ championship and the best drivers. The tension between team bosses, like Toto Wolff of Mercedes and Christian Horner of Red Bull, adds another layer of drama. Their behind-the-scenes battles, often played out in press conferences and interviews, show the immense pressure and stakes in Formula 1.

Even more recently, this season even, we've seen any and every possible type of rivalry. From driver rivalries between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, to team rivalries between Mclaren and Ferrari towards the end of the season. Nonetheless, this season, was really emotionally binding for newer fans, unlike the 2023 season.

But why do these rivalries captivate us? Because they tell a story. They show us what happens when the best of the best fight for glory. They give us moments of joy, big wins and heartbreak, controversy and redemption. And they remind us Formula 1 is a depiction of human emotion and ambition, while driving the fastest cars in circles round the world.

In the end, it’s the rivalries that make us keep watching. Whether it’s Senna vs. Prost, Hamilton vs. Verstappen, Mclaren vs. Ferrari, or the battles yet to come, they bring a sense of unpredictability and excitement to every race. As long as there are drivers willing to push themselves and their rivals to the limit, Formula 1 will always have us on the edge of our seats.
