The 2025 F1 Sim Racing World Championship has brought virtual racing to new heights, captivating some fans worldwide as a filler series before the season's start. This year’s championship, the eighth season since its inception in 2017, commenced on January 14 and concluded on March 27, featuring all ten official Formula 1 teams competing on the F1 24 game developed by Codemasters and published by EA Sports.
Championship Overview
Each team has three drivers to switch around, only being able to use two at a time, while competing across 12 rounds divided into three live events. All teams and drivers are fighting for a prize pool of $750,000. The races were broadcast live on Formula 1's official YouTube.
Key Highlights and Results
Driver’s Championship: Jarno Opmeer, representing Oracle Red Bull Sim Racing, secured his third F1 Esports Driver’s Championship title, reinforcing his status as one of the best sim racers in the sport’s history. Ismael Fahssi achieved a brilliant second-place finish, while Bari Broumand rounded out the top three.
Constructor’s Championship: Oracle Red Bull Sim Racing reclaimed the Constructor’s Championship, demonstrating consistent performance throughout the season. The team’s strategy and skilled drivers were the pathway to success.
Notable Retirement: The season also witnessed the retirement of Brendon Leigh, the inaugural F1 Esports champion, who announced his departure from competitive sim racing prior to the season’s start. Leigh’s contributions have been instrumental in elevating the profile of F1 Esports.
Challenges and Community Engagement
The F1 Esports championship broadcasts this year however, have been more underwhelming. Compared to previous years, the viewership sank drastically. Viewership peaked at 42,877 during Event Two, a decrease from previous years. This of course, could have been caused by a multitude of factors, but personally, I think it is due to the declining interest and popularity in Esports.
Looking forward
The 2025 Esports season has brought us a lot of pleasant surprises. From rookie wins to resurgences of past champions, crashes and unpredictable weather and results, it was overall an amazing season. I have tuned in to all 12 races, and I can honestly say, I don't regret it one bit. I'd give this season a solid 9/10, and therefore I hope this rating inspires others to start watching this awesome series too!
