The 2025 MotoGP pre-season testing sessions at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia and Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand, have set the stage for an interesting season ahead. These tests offered teams and riders crucial insights into their machines’ performance, and information on their data and strategic decisions for the upcoming season.
Sepang Testing Highlights
At Sepang, the Marquez brothers made a significant impact. Alex Marquez, riding for Gresini Racing Ducati, topped the timesheets on the final day with a blistering lap of 1’56.493, narrowly edging out reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia by 0.007 seconds. Fabio Quartararo showcased Yamaha’s potential by securing the third-fastest time, clocking in at 1’56.724. Notably, Marc Marquez, now with the factory Ducati team, posted a time of 1’57.042, placing him fifth overall.
Buriram Testing Highlights
It all continued in Buriram, where Marc Marquez was leading the final day’s session with a time of 1’28.855, the only rider to break into the 1’28s. His brother, Alex Marquez, maintained his strong form, finishing just 0.179 seconds behind. KTM’s rising star, Pedro Acosta, impressed with a third-place finish, trailing Marc by 0.278 seconds. Francesco Bagnaia secured the fifth spot, 0.523 seconds off the leading pace.
Crashes Highlights
Like any series in motorsport, it's not just all topping timesheets, there's also always the risk to crash. And sadly, the Sepang tests did not go uneventful. Among minor crashes that could be tended to by the on site medical centre, we've had three crashes on the 5th of february. Jorge Martín got thrown off in the air in the second corner, a tight left hand, causing a fracture in his right hand and some in his left foot. Has returned to Europe for surgery and treatment. Fabio Di Giannantonio suffered a crash aswell in the 5th turn, fracturing the same collarbone he fractured in the Austrian Grand Prix this past august, and he and his team have returned to Italy for his surgery the night of his incident. Raul Fernandez fractured his left hand aswell, and will get surgery in Barcelona.
Technical Developments and Team Strategies
Ducati made a strategic decision during these tests, utilizing components from their GP24 model instead of the newer GP25. This choice was made by a focus on reliability and fine-tuning electronic and suspension systems. Marc Marquez expressed satisfaction with this approach, which was reflected in his outstanding performance in Buriram.
Aprilia faced challenges with the absence of Jorge Martín but found a silver lining in Marco Bezzecchi’s impressive performance. KTM continued its upward trajectory, with Pedro Acosta securing third place and Maverick Viñales finishing ninth in Buriram. In contrast, Yamaha experienced setbacks, falling behind their Sepang test performance and encountering technical difficulties.
Outlook for the 2025 Season
The pre-season tests have positioned Marc Marquez as a formidable contender for the 2025 championship. His transition to Ducati and consistent top performances prove his determination to reclaim the title. The Marquez brothers’ dominance suggests a compelling sibling rivalry on the horizon. With the season set to start on February 28 at the Chang International Circuit in Thailand, fans eagerly anticipate the unfolding drama and action that MotoGP consistently delivers.
